Aubrey Dan, President of Dancap Productions Inc., announced today the Dancap Productions 2012 Tony Award®-Winning Subscription Series, inspired by the transformative power of the theatre.

The new series features six subscription bonus offerings, AMERICAN IDIOT, IN THE HEIGHTS, SHREK THE MUSICAL, WEST SIDE STORY, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET, plus A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL! and PRINCE OF BROADWAY

“There is a very special connection between the audience and the performers of live theatre” explains Aubrey Dan, “it can be profoundly affecting, even life affirming.”

Dancap Productions continues its commitment to bring transformative Broadway experiences to audiences in Toronto, and across the country. Dancap will be extending its theatrical reach in 2012 with a Montreal presentation of SHREK THE MUSICAL, and a Western Canadian tour of JERSEY BOYS.

“Theatre is a place where people come together to share a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” continues Dan. “It is called “live theatre” because every night, it’s a different work of art on stage. Come excited to our 2012 subscription series, I know you will leave transformed!”

The 2012 Tony Award®-Winning Dancap Productions’ Subscription Series includes:

“The first great musical of the 21st century!” Toronto Star

Kicking off the First National tour of AMERICAN IDIOT in Toronto, the Green Day punk-musical will also kick-start 2012 when performances begin on December 28, 2011.  The smash-hit musical tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award- winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, AMERICAN IDIOT boldly takes the musical where it’s never gone before. With direction by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Steven Hoggett (Black Watch) and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), the result is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

“A singular new sensation!  New York Times

IN THE HEIGHTS is an exhilarating journey into a vibrant community, New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Find out what it takes to make a living, what it costs to have a dream, and what it means to be home.  IN THE HEIGHTS is the winner of four 2008 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre (Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda), Best Choreography (Andy Blankenbuehler), and Best Orchestrations (Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman). The Washington Post said IN THE HEIGHTS is “pure Broadway. An evening of old-style, innocent pleasure.

“Shrek The Musical creates a big bright beautiful world.” Variety

An entirely new musical, based on the hugely popular DreamWorks film, which opened on Broadway December 2009, SHREK THE MUSICAL tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wisecracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess and learns that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairy tales. Believe all Ogre again!  SHREK THE MUSICAL features a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize® winner David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Olivier Award-winner Jeanine Tesori and is directed by Stephen Sposito, associate director for the current Broadway revival of How To Succeed In Business starring Daniel Radcliff.  Dancap productions will present SHREK THE MUSICAL from March 13-18, 2012 at Place des Arts, Montreal, and from March 20 – April 1 at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

“With dances that explode, a pulsating score that still makes us shivers and some surprising innovations, this West Side Story has major sizzle!” Associated Press

More than fifty years ago one musical changed the theatre forever. The recent Broadway revival has continued to mesmerize audiences with its timeless tale of doomed love. From the first note to the final breath, WEST SIDE STORY soars as the greatest love story of all time. Directed by David Saint, using Tony Award®- winning librettist Arthur Laurents’ Broadway direction, WEST SIDE STORY remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The new Broadway cast album of WEST SIDE STORY won the 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album. The Bernstein and Sondheim score is considered to be one of Broadway’s finest and features such classics as “Something’s Coming,” “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty” and “Somewhere.”

“Warm and winning performances, a tuneful score, and real heart.” Chicago Sun-Times

Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, the internationally renowned, award-winning Broadway musical, will launch the Dancap 2012 Summer Series at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in July. The classic love story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a prince trapped under an evil spell, Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST features the animated film’s Academy Award®-winning score with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, with additional songs with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice. Re-discover the romance and enchantment of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, an eye-popping spectacle with cherished characters, lavish sets and costumes, dazzling production numbers, and an unforgettable score of classics including “Be Our Guest” and the beloved title song. The original creators of the Broadway production are together again for this new touring production including director Rob Roth, choreographer by Matt West, and costume designer Ann Hould-Ward.

“Musical fireworks! Million Dollar Quartet gets the cheering audience to its feet!”  Associated Press

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first, and only, time. On December 4, 1956, Sam Phillips, the ‘‘Father of Rock ’n’ Roll” gathered these four young musicians at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time. MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET brings that legendary night to life with an tale of broken promises, celebrations, secrets and betrayal and featuring a string of timeless hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “That’s All Right,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”

“A buoyant new musical that whips the crowd into a frenzy with blast after blast of explosive vitality!” New York Times

Dancap Productions will also offer two bonus shows; a holiday classic and world premiere:

“A bright, betinseled and entertaining show!” Seattle Times

The story from a cherished Christmas movie that has enchanted millions is now a musical spectacular. A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL! chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way towards the holiday gift of his dreams, a Red Ryder Action Air Rifle BB Gun (“You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”). A kooky leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a double-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between young Ralphie and his Christmas wish.

December 2012 at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts.

In the summer of 2012, Dancap Productions will present the world premiere of an original musical, prior to its Broadway run. Dancap is proud to be the lead producer of PRINCE OF BROADWAY, a celebration of the legendary Broadway director and producer Harold “Hal” Prince, whose career is considered the most influential and successful in American theatre. Theatre audiences in Toronto will have the opportunity to be part of theatre history at this exclusive premiere engagement.

PRINCE OF BROADWAY will look at the circumstances and fortune, both good and bad, that led Hal Prince to create some of the most enduring and beloved theatre of all time, from 1954’s Pajama Game to The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running show in Broadway history, among many, many other original productions. Directed by Prince, with co-direction and choreography by Susan Stroman (The Producers), book by David Thompson (The Scottsboro Boys), and vocal and dance arrangements by Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years).

Toronto’s exclusive pre-Broadway engagement of PRINCE OF BROADWAY will feature the words and music from the shows that have earned Hal Prince a record 21 Tony Awards® from Cabaret to Sweeny Todd, from Evita to Fiddler on the Roof and more!
